Often, we need to include examples that use GIFs or short videos.

### **Format**

Use the GIF format for short examples. Make sure its size does not exceed 10 MB (due to Confluence attachment limitations), or at least not by much.

If the file size is too large, record it as a video (.mp4 format) instead. Once approved by QA, create a JIRA ticket in the Docs project to have it uploaded to YouTube and notify the YouTube admins in the team. The video should be set to Unlisted. You can also directly drag the video onto the Confluence page.

> ⚠️ If you are dragging the video directly onto the Confluence page, make sure that you first export it as H.264 via Premiere Pro. Otherwise, the video will not be visible in Mozilla Firefox.

> ℹ️ Avoid adding too many GIFs on a page, and keep in mind that GIFs cannot be paused.

### Recording

Programs we use for recording GIFs: ScreenToGif, ShareX.

Programs we use for recording Videos: OBS, ShareX, Nvidia's own program.

### Focus

Make sure to focus only on the window you are presenting. Exclude all surrounding things from your recording.

**example**: the action is happening in the Asset Editor only, so we show the Asset Editor only: [V-Ray Asset Editor](https://docs-chaos.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/VSKETCHUP/pages/109777030)

If you need to include more than one window, you can still adjust the size of the host app and show only the relevant information.

**example**: [Interactive Rendering](https://docs-chaos.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/VSKETCHUP/pages/109778115)

[video example](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5CCvM6LUAg): this video shows the whole app, but it is resized smaller, so not everything looks too tiny.

### Quality

If you’ve opted for a video, make sure it is of good quality.

You can use [http://ezgif.com](http://ezgif.com) or the built-in optimization tools in ScreenToGif – for example, deleting frames where nothing happens for an extended period.

### Edit

You can also use Photoshop to edit your GIF. Instructions can be found here: [https://drive.google.com/file/d/1zYipP4Cubmw_7A9JXkcmnIhxWp2qAaI8/view](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1zYipP4Cubmw_7A9JXkcmnIhxWp2qAaI8/view)

If you need to hide personal information (e.g., your name, file path, or other sensitive details), apply a mask or censor it using [ezgif](https://ezgif.com/)’s tools or Photoshop.

When working with video files, use Premiere Pro for editing. For more information, see: [Premiere Pro Tips and Tricks](https://docs-chaos.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/DOCSGUIDE/pages/113290861).
