This article explains how to add alt text to images and which naming conventions to follow.

## **What is Alt Text?**

---

Alt text is supplemental text that describes an image for users who rely on screen readers, when the image can’t be displayed, or when the image is processed by an AI tool. It helps search engines index your content more effectively.

## **How to add Alt Text?**

## **Alt Text Conventions**

---

**Rules:**

- Use a single, descriptive sentence that explains what the image shows.
- Make sure you use the correct UI labels and terminology.
- Keep in mind that this text will be read by an AI tool that can’t interpret visuals and relies only on the written description.

**Examples:**

- Example: If an image shows a Delete icon on the Camera tab page in Chaos Vantage without any context, you can use: “*A Delete button used for deleting camera frames.*”
- Example: If an image shows a Delete icon on the Camera tab page in Chaos Vantage in the following sentence that is part of instructions “Use the (delete button image) to delete a camera shot from the camera lister”, you can use: “*Delete Button*”
- Example: If an image shows the user interface of Chaos Envision on the Envision UI page, you can use: “Envision user interface containing a menu bar, home screen button, an asset library button, toolbar, left side panel, right side panel, bottom panel, current view quick settings, a Toggle Timeline Preview Mode button, and a Full Screen Mode button.”

The alt text will be displayed like this in Refined:
