This article provides information about the different types of spaces the PDIX team uses.

## **Types**

---

### **Online vs Offline**

In short, there are two types of Confluence spaces based on their **visibility**: online and offline.

**Online **spaces are public and are accessible through the Refined Theme website by anonymous users.

*Example: online Confluence space *[https://docs-chaos.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/LAV/pages/124652974](https://docs-chaos.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/LAV/pages/124652974) * accessible through Refined *[https://documentation.chaos.com/space/LAV/124652974/What%27s+New](https://documentation.chaos.com/space/LAV/124652974/What%27s+New) * *

Both links are visible to anonymous users, but we should provide users only with Refined links and **not **distribute the Confluence public links.

**Offline **spaces are hidden and serve as draft environments for their corresponding online spaces. Each offline space is linked to an online space, which acts as its target space. When you publish an offline space, its content is copied into the online space. Offline spaces can also be viewed through the Refined Theme website.

*Example: offline Confluence space *[https://docs-chaos.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/LAV4EDIT/pages/115904994](https://docs-chaos.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/LAV4EDIT/pages/115904994) * accessible through Refined *[https://documentation.chaos.com/space/LAV4EDIT/115904994/What%27s+New](https://documentation.chaos.com/space/LAV4EDIT/115904994/What%27s+New)

Neither link is visible to anonymous users, and we should **not **share them with anonymous users.

### **Target vs Source**

In Confluence, the offline spaces are considered **Source **spaces, and the online spaces are considered **Target **(Published Versions) spaces. Updates are always done to the Source space. When a Source space is synced with its Target space, all changes made to the Source space are copied to the Target space.

*Example:*

*Source space: *[https://docs-chaos.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/LAV4EDIT](https://docs-chaos.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/LAV4EDIT)

*Target space: *[https://docs-chaos.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/LAV](https://docs-chaos.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/LAV)

### **Confluence vs Refined**

**Confluence Cloud** is where we write and update our documentation.

**Refined Theme** shows how the documentation pages will appear to anonymous users.

> ❌ Please note that the **Overview page** (for example: [https://docs-chaos.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/DOCSGUIDE](https://docs-chaos.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/DOCSGUIDE) ) of each space cannot be previewed in Refined. In Refined, you need to edit the main layout page of each space directly (for example: [https://documentation.chaos.com/space/DOCSGUIDE](https://documentation.chaos.com/space/DOCSGUIDE) ).

## **Where should you work?**

---

You should always work in the Confluence Cloud offline spaces, e.g. [https://docs-chaos.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/LAV4EDIT/pages/115904994](https://docs-chaos.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/LAV4EDIT/pages/115904994), [https://docs-chaos.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/LAV4EDIT/pages/115901854](https://docs-chaos.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/LAV4EDIT/pages/115901854), or [https://docs-chaos.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/ENVISION4EDIT/pages/115445871](https://docs-chaos.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/ENVISION4EDIT/pages/115445871).

In rare cases, you may need to temporarily hide an update in a Confluence Cloud online space. See the [Workflow tip](https://docs-chaos.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/DOCSGUIDE/pages/113278987#TIP).

You should always share Refined links to online spaces with clients.
