## **What are Text Input Fields?**

---

**Text input fields** use various types of supporting text to help users enter accurate information. Form fields can include UX text such as labels, hints, and prefilled text for entering names, email addresses, numbers, dates, and other information. When a field cannot be prefilled, use labels outside the text field and hints inside the text field to indicate what content the user should enter.

Users often interpret hints as a prefilled field.

There are four options for the label and hint text of an input field:

- name of the information to be entered
- example of the information to be entered
- verb-first instructions about entering information
- guidance for how the person can be successful

> ⚠️ Note that to make the path forward clearer and make users more successful, it’s ok to use inconsistent options for the UX text pattern on the same screen.

## **Common Patterns**

---

Common patterns usually are:

- {common information name}, such as “Name”
- {verb} [the] {noun}, such as “Confirm new password”
- Example information, such as “[yourname@email.com](mailto:yourname@email.com)”
- Guidance for how users can succeed, such as “Describe the help you are seeking.”
