This page provides details on writing microcopy for labels.

## **What are Labels?**

---

**Labels **are used to indicate sections, categories, status, progress, quantity, or unit. They minimize the effort required to understand the experience with noun phrases and adjectives that name or describe things. Labels are ubiquitous where there is a lot of detail to convey, because they communicate a lot of information in a compact, no-nonsense format.

Labels generally relate to passive screen elements such as icons or sections, and are limited to that local context.

## **Rules**

---

- Use single nouns or noun pairs whenever possible.
- Choose specific terms – be as precise as you can.
- Ensure that labels within a set are clearly distinguishable from one another.
- Avoid jargon that users may not understand.
- When localization is involved, use prepositions carefully.
- Use sentence case with first word capitalized for multi-word labels in most Chaos products. Enscape is an exception to this rule, and each word in its labels is capitalized.

## **Common Patterns**

---

Common patterns usually are: {noun}, or {unit}, or {number}

## **Examples**

---

Some common examples include the General Properties section in Envision’s camera properties and the Cloud Collaboration tab in Chaos Cloud.
