This page provides details about the Override material available for creation in Chaos Vantage.

The following examples demonstrate the effect that individual Override Material parameters have on the scene. Click on any image to view it at a higher resolution.

### **Example: Reflection Override**

The following example uses a very simple scene containing five chairs, a light source, and a studio-type environment. Each chair has an Override material assigned, but only the **Base Material** is active. As a result, all rendered chairs share the same diffuse colors and reflections.

Now, each chair has a different material assigned to its **Reflection Override** slot. The first chair uses a green diffuse color, the second uses black, the third uses blue, the fourth uses purple, and the fifth uses a red diffuse color. Vantage uses these materials whenever the objects are seen in reflections.

In this scene, the environment itself is a reflective surface, so the chairs appear reflected in it. Additionally, the base material of the chairs is also reflective (Fresnel type), which is why the fourth chair’s Reflection Override material can be seen reflected in the middle chair.

### **Example: Refraction Override**

The next render is even more complex, as the chairs’ Refraction Override materials are also activated. From left to right, the chairs use blue and red diffuse colors for their refraction overrides. These materials are applied when the objects are viewed through refraction, and Vantage renders them accordingly.

As you can see, the Reflection materials are still affecting the render image. If you take a closer look at the glass chairs' edges, you will notice the green reflection, which is actually the reflection material of the right chair. While Vantage had been tracing the rays on the chairs' surfaces, those polygons on the edges had first captured a reflection, so that's why there are green traces.
